Thomas the Train History

Thomas and friendBased on the Railway Series of books written by the Reverend W. Awdry (1911-1997), Thomas the Train and his friends were created in 1942 to entertain the Reverend's son, who was sick with the measles. That Christmas, his son Christopher received a simple wooden train named Thomas, which led to more stories about Thomas Train and his railway friends. Backed by his wife's enthusiasm and encouragement, The Reverend found a publisher for his stories. In 1945 The Three Railway Engines was published, with stories in this book featuring Gordon, Henry, and Edward. (Thomas was featured in the second book, Thomas the Train.)

Before retiring in 1973, Reverend Awdry published 26 books. In the early 1980s, Christopher continued in his father's footsteps. He began writing railway stories for his own young son, Richard, and published his first story in 1983. In all, 40 Railway Series books were published.

More about Thomas the Train

Thomas is a little engine, quite particular and with attitude, who proudly wears #1 on his side. Thomas' friends on the Island of Sodor each have their own special job to do, and each has a unique and special personality. Joining him in his adventures are his engine friends, including happy Percy, temperamental James, and the proud Gordon who likes to brag a lot. Coaches Annie and Clarabel, Bertie the Bus, Terence the Tractor, and Harold the Helicopter are always along for the ride. The kindly superintendent of the railway, Sir Topham Hatt, makes sure things are kept in order.
